PostSony Dominates in Japan

All the pieces lined up just right for Sony this past week, and
despite a slow start for the PSP go, the PlayStation brand was dominant
in Japan.

Fueled by a highly visible marketing campaign and high scores in
Famitsu, Bayonetta's PS3 version topped the charts. The 360 version
didn't do so bad either, placing in 7th with half the PS3 version's
sales. The 360 version received a perfect rating in Famitsu, a couple
of points higher than the PS3 version.

Persona 3 Portable is notable because its sales account for just
one day. The game was released on a Sunday to coincide with the PSP
go's launch.

Here's the full Media Create software chart for October 26 through November 11.

  • Bayonetta (Sega, PS3): 135,000
  • Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden (Square Enix, NDS): 115,000
  • Tekken 6 (Namco Bandai, PS3): 103,000
  • Persona 3 Portable (Atlus, PSP): 94,000
  • Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver (Pokemon, NDS): 88,000 (2,844,000)
  • Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo, Wii): 81,000 (780,000)
  • Bayonetta (Sega, X360): 64,000
  • Friend Collection (Nintendo, NDS): 53,000 (1,519,000)
  • Inazuma Eleven 2 Fire/Blizzard (Level-5, NDS): 41,000 (527,000)
  • Super Robot Taisen Neo (Namco Bandai, Wii): 27,000

Taken together, PSP and PSP go managed to finally dethrone the DSi
in the portable hardware race. But more interesting is that PSP go was,
in its debut week, outsold by the standard PSP.

Also notable is a slight sales boost for PS3, presumably due to
Tekken and Bayonetta. The system continues to outpace the Wii, although
Nintendo does have a strong early December (New Super Mario Bros.,
Tales of Graces, Samurai Warriors) to look forward to.

Here's the full hardware chart.

  • DSi: 37,517 (42,199)
  • PS3: 36,061, (29,977)
  • PSP: 34,911 (32,865)
  • PSPgo: 29,109
  • Wii: 28,888 (25,917)
  • DS Lite: 6,902 (6,550)
  • X360: 6,047 (4,470)
  • PS2: 1,966 (1,951)

Next week's charts could see PS3 at the top of the consoles once
again, this time backed by Winning Eleven and 3D Dot Game Heroes. We'll
also be watching PSP go to see how the download-only system fares in
Japan.
