Among the many announcements during Sony’s TGS press conference today, one that should stand out as a milestone for the entertainment media giant is its current stance in worldwide PS3 sales. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano stated Sony has managed to push 38 million PS3 consoles worldwide, with five million being sold in Japan alone.
In addition, Kawano said that the PSP has moved 62 million units sold worldwide, with Japanese gamers having purchased 15 million of those units.
Further details provided by Famitsu publisher Enterbrain show lifetime sales numbers for all current generation platforms.
DS: 31,039,215
PSP: 15,009,120
Wii 10,655,962
PS3: 5,501,923
360: 1,354,685
The PS3 seems to have a clear lead above the Xbox 360 in Japan, however it still has a way to go before conquering Nintendo and the Wii.
