Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada has divulged a heap of juicy details on the newly unveiled Tekken Tag Tournament 2, confirming among things that the game will sport the largest character roster in the series' history.
For starters, Harada confirmed that players will able to execute a variety of tag-specific manoeuvres, and unlike the first Tekken Tag, you and your partner will be able to appear on-screen simultaneously and deliver a combined assault.
"In the first Tekken Tag you would just launch your opponent and you could change out and you could have your second character come out and possibly continue to attack."
"As you may have seen in the trailer we had a little bit more going on, so maybe two people could attack at the same time."
"First off there was three people and if you look closely there was actually four people on screen at the same time," Harada told Gamespot.
"So with that in mind you can call your tag partner out and kind of attack simultaneously. Or perhaps you could launch your opponent, have your partner come out, continue your attack while you switch out and perhaps even switch back again."
Elsewhere, Harada-san confirmed that recent series additions such destructible scenery and the bounce system will make a comeback, adding, "All of this naturally makes its way into Tag 2 but it's not just those elements plus tag, we kind of take those elements a step further."
"You can kind of include that in your tag combos and there are many possibilities that open up as a result."
"There's also one other thing that I can hint at that's that there might be some other new additions to the stages."
As for the number of playable characters, while Harada wouldn’t commit to a specific amount, he did reveal that beat ‘em up would contain "the largest roster in the series to date."
In regards to the game’s release, Harada made it clear nothing has been set in stone for an inevitable console port, though acknowledged the decline in the popularity of arcades in the West:
"We do realise that there are a lot of areas of the globe where arcades are non-existent, the West in particular, but Asia's still doing pretty well."
"Thinking of that we do aim to get it out as soon as possible for the fans but that's all we can really say."
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is pencilled in for a release in Japanese arcades in summer 2011.
